2019 has been intense and highly productive, a year in which all the fields in which we conduct impactful science of excellence have been consolidated.

Committed to health research
This year, we have made major discoveries about diseases like cancer and fatty liver, and about the Epstein-Barr virus. Our research groups have published more than 160 articles in journals such as Nature, Cell and Nature Genetics.

The spin-off from IRB Barcelona and ICREA was founded by researchers Salvador Aznar-Benitah and Valerie Vanhooren, and it focuses on the development of a new drug for the treatment of metastatic cancer.
The spin-off Nostrum Biodiscovery won the 2019 Senén Vilaró Prize
The spin-off from IRB Barcelona and the BSC-CNS received the Senén Vilaró Prize, given by the “Consejo Social” of the UB and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation to the best innovative company.
“StarLife”, a new informatics infrastructure to boost biomedical research
The joint initiative of IRB Barcelona, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the Centre for Genomic Regulation was funded by the Catalan Government, through the European Regional Development Fund, and by ”la Caixa” Foundation.

Toni Gabaldón joined the IRB Barcelona research team as head of the Comparative Genomics lab.
The 3rd edition of the ENABLE, a symposium organized by young researchers, was held in Nijmegen (the Netherlands).
ICREA researcher at IRB, Eduard Batlle, has been distinguished with the 2018 Premi Ciutat de Barcelona for his studies in cancer and metastasis.
ICREA researcher from IRB received the Constantes y Vitales a la Investigación biomédica y la Prevención en salud Award.
The Pfizer Foundation has awarded IRB scientist, Gloria Pascual, with the Scientific Innovation Prize in the “Basic Research” category.
IRB Barcelona scientist, Joan J. Guinovart, was awarded the XXII Prize from the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia.
Director of IRB, Francesc Posas, and the head of the Cell Signalling Lab, Modesto Orozco, received the 2018 ICREA Academia Award.
IRB Barcelona Alumni Ana Janic, Group Leader of DCEXS-UPF, was honored with the 2019 IRB Barcelona Alumni Excellence Award.
IRB Barcelona and Hokkaido University have signed a scientific collaboration agreement thanks to IRB Alumni, Dr. Fayna M. García.
Biomed conference organized by Cayetano González brought together more than 150 scientists to analyze Drosophila as a cancer modell.
Manuel Serrano, ICREA researcher at IRB Barcelona, co-organised the Biomed conference Immunotherapy beyond cancer. A cure for age-related diseases.

Committed to society
We firmly believe in the importance of citizen engagement in science and of our contributions to the smooth running of the society in which we live. This year, we have promoted a wide range of scientific dissemination activities, launched the Metastasis Challenge, approved the new IRB Barcelona Code of Conduct and started the Caliper project for gender equality.
