Promoted by the “Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera” and aimed at baccalaureate students who are interested in and show an inclination towards a specific scientific discipline, the “Crazy about Science” Programme seeks to foster scientific talent among young people.

The “Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera” has launched a new training initiative, “Crazy about Science”, which will be undertaken with the collaboration of some of the main research centres in the country, among these IRB Barcelona. This new programme has come about thanks to the pre-existing collaboration between this organisation and IRB Barcelona in the framework of the “Crazy about Biomedicine” Programme, which currently involves 24 baccalaureate students.

As a result of the success of the “Crazy about Biomedicine” initiative and the interest shown by students and the education community, this programme is being extended to other scientific disciplines.

The registration period for the 2014 edition of Crazy about Biomedicine, which now forms part of the new “Crazy about Science” Programme, opens today, 18 September, and closes on 17 October.

The new “Crazy about Science” Programme

“Crazy about Science” is aimed at baccalaureate students who are interested in and show an inclination towards science. The training sessions will take place over 18 Saturdays as of January 2014 and will address several current scientific topics. Registration for this programme opens today and ends on 17 October. Students applying have to undergo a selection process. This training initiative offers students the opportunity to go further into the theory and the scientific techniques used in the various fields of research proposed, namely: chemistry, biochemistry, biomedicine, new technologies, archaeology and economics.

Trained in the research centres and guided by the very scientists doing the investigation, the students will gain hands-on experience of what it is like to work in science in an international research centre and practical training in cutting-edge techniques. An experience of this nature will to help them decide on a possible scientific career in their field of interest.

The new training programme, which is free of charge, offers a total of 154 places in 6 research centres in Catalonia:

1. Institut Català d’Investigació Química (ICIQ) – Tarragona – Crazy about Chemistry. 21 places
2. Institut Català de Paleoecologia i Evolució Social (IPHES), Institut Català d’Arqueologia Clàssica (ICAC) i Institut Català de Recerca en Patrimoni Cultural (ICRPC) – Tarragona and Girona – Crazy about Archeology. 30 places
3. La Salle, Universitat Ramon Llull – Barcelona - Crazy about New Technologies. 25 places
