Around 400 people gathered in a charity wine-tasting event to raise funds for metastasis research conducted at IRB Barcelona.

On Saturday 28 November, the Llobet-Guri Factory in Calella hosted around 400 people in its second charity “Vi per Vida” wine-tasting event —the fifth gathering in the series organised by charity headed by the sommelier Xavier Ayala. (See ALBUM in IRB Barcelona's Facebook)

For only 5 euros, the participants had the opportunity to taste 6 wines belonging to different Catalan DOs: Alella, Montsant, Priorat, Catalunya and Empordà. The event was presented by TV3 journalist Elisabet Carnicè and the wine tasting by Xavi Ayala. Catering students from the Institut Bisbe Sivilla de Calella attended the public and served the wines.

The proceeds from the “Vi per Vida” campaigns are given to the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona). With a programme specifically devoted to research into cancer and metastasis, the latter causing 90% of deaths from cancer, the institute conducts around 50 projects in this field of research.

Joan Guinovart, director of IRB Barcelona, said, “it is fantastic to see the room so full”, and went on to say to those present at “Vi per Vida” events that “they are great experiences because not only do we have fun and learn about good Catalan wines but these gatherings also support cutting-edge research into cancer and metastasis. Many thanks for getting involved.”

Xavier Ayala, who founded the charity organization “Vi per Vida” in May 2014, announced that Calella would be hosting another wine-tasting event in November 2016, thus consolidating this event in one of the municipal areas of Catalonia with strong social and charity activity. “Vi per Vida” holds three wine-tasting events per year, participates in many activities related to wine, and collaborates with restaurants such as the tasca basca Maitea in Barcelona, which offer charity “Vi per Vida” tapas.

This year Agustí Torelló’s winery AT ROCA has produced the first charity wine for the "Vi per Vida" Foundation. Made from 100% macabeu grape, “Cop de Cor” is a wine from the Penedès region and it can be purchased for 19.90 euros a bottle through the web enterwine.
