The 4th IRB Barcelona PhD Students’ Retreat aims to bring its PhD student community together to exchange experiences and knowledge.
Presentation
This event will include talks and poster sessions presented by and for students. Furthermore, speakers from outside IRB Barcelona will be invited to give presentations, thus providing participants an insightful view into career options after IRB Barcelona.
Objectives:
- To present scientific data (oral presentation or poster)

- To enhance interaction between students

The PhD Retreat will last two days, beginning on the morning of Friday 21 October and finishing on the afternoon of Saturday 22 October. All the events will be held at the Hotel Bernat II in Calella de Mar.

Paolo Saccardo
Paolo Saccardo, Multiple Sclerosis MSL at the immunology medical department of Sandoz, a Novartis Division.
Born in 1984 and raised in a beautiful village near Venice, Italy, and passionate about nature, food and music. I graduated with a degree in Biotechnology at the University of Padova and moved to Barcelona in 2008 as an Erasmus student at the Autonomous University of Barcelona where I eventually presented my PhD thesis titled “Development of artificial viruses for nanomedicine and gene therapy” in 2015. The following 4 years as a postdoc, I worked as the Project Manager and Technical Coordinator of the Protein Production Platform service at the ICTS-NANBIOSIS, ISCIII.
In 2019, I decided to boost my career with a postgraduate diploma in Business Administration and Management at the EADA business school, and in 2020 I was admitted as a Trainee at Novartis España in the neurology medical department where I focused on Multiple Sclerosis.
Today, I am an MSL at the Immunology medical department at Sandoz, covering the multiple sclerosis biosimilar portfolio in the whole Spain territory.
Marie Trussart
Marie Trussart is a former PhD student from the CRG and she is really passionate about helping people progress in their career and she has been formed through different programs of leadership, coaching and entrepreneurship. As a Certified Organisational Coach from the IECL, she founded Kintsugi Coaching in 2019 (http://kintsugicoach.org/) to help others through coaching sessions to uncover their limiting beliefs, hidden strengths and aspirations and guide them through their process to reach their full potential at work.

Tiago Botelho
Dr. Tiago Botelho, Senior business development manager at IRB Barcelona.
He is part of the Innovation team of IRB Barcelona since 2013 is responsible for the interactions with industry and has been involved in constitution of the last five spin-offs. Tiago is also evaluator on the Catapult and Headstart EiTHealth programmes and teaches technology transfer in two master programmes in management. Previously, he occupied positions related to business and research, both in the public and private sectors.
Interested in innovation, technology transfer and applying innovation to biotechnology and entrepreneurship. His scientific background is complemented by his degree in applied chemistry to biotechnology and with research positions in different institutes in Portugal from biophysics to molecular and cellular pathology.
Javier Carmona
Javier Carmona graduated in Biology at University Autónoma of Madrid, and in 2013 he obtained his PhD with extraordinary doctorate award, working in cancer epigenetics under the supervision of Dr Manel Esteller at IDIBELL (Barcelona). Following his defense, he was recruited as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Dr Jose Baselga at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York, to investigate mechanisms of therapy resistance in breast cancer. In 2016, Javier joined the editorial team of Nature Medicine to coordinate the areas of oncology and artificial intelligence in biomedicine, and in 2019 he became Deputy Editor at the journal. During his time at Nature Publishing Group, Javier led the cross-journal cancer community of editors and participated in the organization of several scientific international meetings and evaluation committees across different areas of research. He moved back to Spain in 2021, and in February 2022 he was appointed Scientific Strategy Officer at Vall d'Hebron Oncology Institute (VHIO), where he supports the scientific vision and international relations of the Institute.
Jessica Vitos
Jessica Vitos is a biotech investor. Currently, she works as Senior Manager at Grifols’ corporate venture arm, where she is responsible for identifying and evaluating new investment opportunities. Prior to joining Grifols, she worked as an investment analyst at Ysios Capital, evaluating the scientific foundations and the business proposals of early and clinical-stage biotech companies.
Jessica holds a MSc and a PhD in Biomedicine from Barcelona University. During her PhD at IRB Barcelona, she worked at the laboratory of Signaling and Cell Cycle, leaded by Prof. Ángel Nebreda. The focus of her research was the role of stress-activated protein kinases during the progression of lung cancer.
Mateusz Biesaga
Mateusz Biesaga is a biotech entrepreneur. He works as Head of Technology at Nuage Therapeutics, a spin-off from IRB Barcelona and ICREA, which he co-founded with his PhD supervisor Xavier Salvatella. At Nuage Tx, Mateusz is responsible for directing technology-related matters and coordinating research activities. During his prior experience, he was a MSCA co-fund PhD fellow at the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics at IRB Barcelona where he studied how to target intrinsically disordered proteins with small molecules for a therapeutic benefit. Mateusz received his education in bioengineering from Grenoble Institute of Technology and AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow.
