The 5th IRB Barcelona PhD Students’ Retreat aims to bring its PhD student community together to exchange experiences and knowledge.

This event will include talks and poster sessions presented by and for students. Furthermore, speakers from outside IRB Barcelona will be invited to give presentations, thus providing participants an insightful view into career options after IRB Barcelona. 

Objectives:

- To present scientific data (oral presentation or poster)

- To discuss data presented by students

- To enhance interaction between students

Programme

The PhD Retreat will last two days, beginning on the morning of Friday 18 October and finishing on the afternoon of Saturday 19 October. All the events will be held at the Hotel Bernat II in Calella de Mar.

By car

The Hotel Bernat II Calella is situated 60 km from Barcelona.

Take the C-31 motorway, direction Girona/Mataró/Badalona Sud, merge onto C-32 and take exit 122 toward Calella/Pineda de Mar/Sta. Susanna.

Take Ronda de Dalt/B-20/C-32 direction Besós and then, take exit 122 toward Calella/Pineda de Mar/Sta. Susanna.

By train

Rodalies Barcelona – Renfe:

The journey from Barcelona takes 1h and 10 minutes. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes. You can consult the timetable on the RENFE website. The hotel is 15 minutes walk from Calella station.

 

By plane (From El Prat Airport, Barcelona):

Rodalies Barcelona – RENFE or Aerobús to Plaça Catalunya; from there take Line R1 Molins de Rei / L’Hospitalet - Mataró / Maçanet – Massanes until Calella Station.

Speakers

Miriam Martí holds a degree in Biology from UPF and a Master's in Scientific, Medical, and Environmental Communication from UPF-IDEC. She has two years of experience as a scientific advisor for the TV3 program "Quequicom" and has worked at FCRI (Fundación Catalana para la Investigación y la Innovación), where she managed scientific outreach programs. Miriam spent three years at ICFO as the outreach coordinator, where she used various forms of art, including audiovisual media, theater, and magic, to promote science communication. In addition to her outreach work, she has acted in several micro-theater productions with scientific themes and is currently working as a teacher at Vila de Gràcia's high school.

Miriam Comet graduated in Biomedical Sciences from UB and holds a Master’s in Neuroscience from UAB. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Research Methods and Diagnostics in Education at UB. She has contributed to the European project on science and gender, "Diversity of Science." Driven by her passion for both feminism and science, she works on various projects that integrate a gender perspective into education, in collaboration with the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD). She also conducts gender-focused workshops with the GrediDona research group. As a co-founder of the science communication project "Luciferases," she is dedicated to communicating science through a social and feminist lens.

Clara Borras graduated in Biomedical Sciences from UB, with a Master’s in Cancer, Stem Cells, and Developmental Biology from the University of Utrecht, and a postgraduate degree in Scientific Illustration. She holds a Ph.D. in Immuno-oncology and is currently a Postdoctoral researcher in the Innate Immunity Biology group at IRB. Simultaneously, she works independently as a scientific illustrator, specializing in visually communicating complex scientific concepts to bridge the gap between science and art. Daniel Massó holds a degree in Biology from UAB, and a Master’s in Advanced Genetics (UAB). After completing his PhD and a short postdoc on cancer research at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology, Daniel joined the spin-off company Peptomyc, contributing to the initiation of a clinical trial testing the safety and efficacy of a first-in-class MYC inhibitor. Three years later, he decided to explore new avenues in drug development. To this end, he joined a pharmaceutical company headquartered in the USA as a Medical Science Liaison, supporting the development of a novel immunotherapy agent across Phase 1-3 trials in several European countries. He is currently the EU Medical Lead at Mural Oncology.

Matthew Murtha is a molecular biologist, science communicator, and comedian with a passion for making complex research accessible and engaging. He earned his PhD from The Ohio State University, where he explored transcription factors in neuronal development, before pioneering a novel genomic annotation technique during his postdoctoral work at NYU School of Medicine. He continued his research at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) in Barcelona, focusing on the epigenetics of cancer and autism. Currently, Dr. Murtha works as a proofreader for Springer Nature Group, while also blending science and humour through his program "Technically Funny," bringing cutting-edge research to the public via live shows, podcasts, and radio.

Anastasia Herrero graduated in Biotechnology in Argentina and later pursued a PhD in Neurosciences at the Leloir Institute in Buenos Aires, where she studied neuronal remodeling in the circadian clock of Drosophila melanogaster, resulting in four publications in international scientific journals. She then moved to Barcelona to work as a postdoctoral researcher in the Cell Division lab at IRB Barcelona, collaborating with Sant Joan de Déu Hospital on a project to understand the molecular basis of Ewing Sarcoma, contributing to another publication. After nearly three years, she decided to shift her professional path to human resources, working as a recruiter in the pharmaceutical industry for a year and a half. She eventually returned to her roots at IRB, this time in the Academic Office of Human Resources, where she now coordinates, manages, and recruits talent for the undergrad, PhD, and postdoctoral communities.
