IRB Barcelona International PhD programme: on TARGET for high-impact biomedicine
IRB Barcelona is a vibrant multidisciplinary institute where scientists address challenging and pressing biomedical problems in a collaborative fashion to provide groundbreaking solutions to unmet medical needs.
A challenge in cancer research
Cancer metastasis—the spread of cancer cells from the primary tumour to other organs and tissues—is responsible for more than 90% of deaths related to this disease, making it one of the most pressing challenges in oncology. Despite advancements in cancer treatments, metastasis remains poorly understood and difficult to treat.
Testimonials
"The IRB_Dream fellowships caught my attention from the start of the hiring process. It is really cool that an institute is giving students the opportunity to join the MSCA community while choosing their own project and their favourite research group."

"I felt like IRB Barcelona was really making an effort, to take care of PhD students and make sure they have a good experience. (...) The Institute had a very good atmosphere, and also especially my current lab. Barcelona is a nice city, and I had a good fellowship, so there wasn't really any reason for me not to come here."

"The programme is international, so it offers the possibility to open collaborations on a European level more easily. Also, IRB Barcelona has a very good research programme. The PIs who work at this institute are very known in the scientific community, in fact they attracted my attention. In general, IRB has a reputation in Spain but also in general at a European level."

"The research community at IRB Barcelona fosters such a collaborative environment, not only intra-institution but also inter-institution with the various individual institutes in the PCB, BIST, and Barcelona. This close collaboration not only makes it easier to reach out to experts across the field and do interdisciplinary science but also includes various learning experiences that could be helpful during my academic career."

«We suspected that CPEB1, a protein involved in regulating mRNA translation in the cytoplasm, might also be active in the nucleus and play a role in controlling pre-mRNA processing. We discovered that it affects the alternative generation in the mature mRNA of the 3'-UTR, regions where most of the elements regulating translation in time and space are located.»
