ICREA Research Professor, ERC Advanced Grant
Angel R. Nebreda studied Biology at the University of Salamanca and obtained his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the same university. Then, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda (USA) and at the Clare Hall Laboratories of Cancer Research-UK in South Mimms (United Kingdom). In 1995 he started his own research group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg (Germany) where he worked for 9 years, and then moved to the newly created National Center for Cancer Research (CNIO) in Madrid (Spain) as a Senior Group Leader. From 2010 he is an ICREA Research Professor and Group Leader at the IRB Barcelona.
He has extensive experience investigating mechanisms of signal transduction, and for the last 20 years has focused on molecular oncology. Current research projects include studies on stress-activated protein kinases, and the mechanisms of homeostasis and chemoresistance in tumor cells. A major goal of the group is to identify therapeutic opportunities based on the modulation of cell signaling pathways, especially aiming at heterogeneous and chemoresistant tumors. He was elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2003. His publications have been cited more than 28.000 times.
