The scientist Joan Massagué, director of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Programe at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and adjunct director of the Institute for research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), is to give a presentation called "Oncological Research: Promises and Challenges". This event will be held at Institut d’Estudis Vallencs (calle Jaume Huguet 1, Valls) at 19.30h on 21 December.

Joan Massagué holds a degree in Pharmacy and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Barcelona (1978). In 1979 he moved to Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island, USA) to do his post-doctoral studies. He has focused his research on the mechanisms by which tumour cells divide and invade new tissues. These studies have received numerous prizes, among these the "Premio Nacional de Investigación "Rey Juan Carlos"", the "Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Investigación Científica y Técnica", the Saint George Cross, and the Vilcek, Passano and Fonrtiers of Knowledge awards.
