The two organisations sign agreements concerning scientific and educational matters.
This month, IRB Barcelona and the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS), Nijmegen, the Netherlands, have signed collaboration agreements on research and training. The agreements pave the way to strengthen current exchanges between the two centres and to explore new collaboration opportunities. The signature took place in the Netherlands on 3 June between Joan J. Guinovart, director of IRB Barcelona, and Paul Smits, vice-president of RIMLS and member of its research committee. IRB Barcelona was also represented by Raúl Méndez, Chair of Postgraduate Training, and Patricia Nadal, Academic Coordinator.
Research ties
Science now has to tackle increasingly complex questions, which, to be answered, require the collaboration of researchers working in diverse disciplines and like institutes. The development of international scientific networks and centres is crucial for cutting-edge discoveries and for the translation of basic research findings to clinical practice.
These agreements reinforce IRB Barcelona’s international ties and its commitment to participating in joint research endeavours.
Research of excellence is a hallmark of the two centres. RIMLS covers fields ranging from molecular biology to the development of tools for personalised medicine.
Training ties
As of the next academic year (September 2015), undergraduates and master students at IRB Barcelona will be able to participate in the Masters Programme “Molecular Mechanisms of Diseases”, given by RIMLS. PhD student placements will also be organised to allow the students to become familiar with the facilities and technology available in the other centre.
All these exchange initiatives open up collaboration opportunities between research groups at IRB Barcelona and RIMLS.
About IRB Barcelona
The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
