More than 75 scientists will be making their research projects known to the public.

IRB Barcelona will be participating through the workshop "Protein synthesis: Xenopus oocytes".

From 11 to 14 April, the 16th "Recerca en Directe" Fair will be held at CosmoCaixa, involving the participation of more than 75 scientists from leading research centres in Catalonia, including the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona).

The first three days of the fair are aimed at pupils, who will have the chance to get involved in a range of projects through workshops. IRB Barcelona will be giving a workshop in which participants will be able to distinguish the different developmental stages of oocytes from the African frog “Xenopus”, perform chromatography and, with the help of UV lamps, determine whether the synthesis of a protein is affected or not. Manuel Cañete, Cristina Fuster and Alícia Llorente, PhD students at the Institute, will be giving the workshop.

On the last day, the doors of the fair will be open to the public, and Francesc Orella, the main character in the Merlí series, will give a class on transcendental aspects of scientific research.

About the "Recerca en Directe" Fair

Organised by the Barcelona Science Park and Obra Social "la Caixa", this activity aims to bring research closer to the public—allowing them to participate in projects undertaken in various centres—and to promote scientific culture.

From its start, IRB Barcelona, through its Public Engagement and Science Education Office, has participated in these fairs.
