In an opinion article published in “El Periódico de Catalunya”, Manel Esteller explains that excellent researchers born or trained in Catalonia are now found all over the world. Some have moved willingly while others have been forced to do so because of the current economic climate.
Esteller mentions the set-up of centres of excellence such as IRB Barcelona and the CRG in Barcelona, which have allowed Catalonia to attract and retain talent. Esteller believes that Barcelona continues to be attractive to researchers but that we have to carefully preserve its profile in order to ensure that scientists continue to choose the city as a place to live and work. Esteller calls out to Catalan physicians and researchers living abroad but with links with Catalonia, such as Joan Masasgué, to become ambassadors of the brand Catalonia & Barcelona.
