The program “PhD Express!”, an initiative of the Barcelona Science Park, is being run by the IRB Barcelona researchers Clara Morral, Francisco Barriga and Helena González.
The 160 places available for secondary school students have already been filled.
Science Week in Catalonia is held from 15 to 24 November.
On Tuesday 19 and Thursday 21 November, at 10 h and 15h, there will be open day sessions for the 'PhD Express!' programme at the Barcelona Science Park, as part of the agenda of activities included in the 18th Science Week, which is held in Catalonia from 15 to 24 November.
The 'PhD Express!' programme is run by researchers belonging to the Oncology Programme at IRB Barcelona. The 40 places available in each of the four sessions have been filled, and a total of 160 secondary school students will do a PhD express in two and a half hours.
The topic on this occasion, 'How can we identify gene mutations involved in cancer?', will focus on the analysis of the behavioural differences between malignant tumour cells and benign cells, from the perspective of their gene activity. Involving the adaptation of various research projects for the public audience, this activity will be presented by the scientists Clara Morral and Francisco Barriga, both working in the Colorectal Cancer Lab.
The activity will also be supported by the collaboration of another IRB Barcelona researcher, Helena González, who will be accompanying the students around different rooms and labs at the Barcelona Science Park that are involved in the project. The session ends with a tour of the “Centre Nacional d'Anàlisi Genòmica (CNAG), which is located at Park.
“Do Research” workshops
IRB Barcelona is also participating in the 8th “Do Research Fair”, organized by the Barcelona Science Park. Involving four workshops held in “La Pedrera” Building of Barcelona, this initiative is held over various Saturdays in November and is aimed at the general public. IRB Barcelona researchers give two workshops.
“Do research!” seeks to improve scientific culture through a series of experimental workshops and to strengthen scientific vocation among young people. The researchers invite the general public to do experiments and to learn the lab techniques that they use in everyday biomedical research.
