What can you do to make yourself a more effective doctoral researcher and get the most out of your PhD?
BIST centres by using the VITAE’s framework, have organised an interactive and intensive two-day course: “How to succeed in your PhD?”, which has been designed for you as first year doctoral researcher and will look at practical ways to increase your effectiveness and meet the challenges of your PhD.

Participants are placed in learning groups to work on a range of activities. From this you will gain awareness of your performance as an individual and in a team. You will use and develop skills that are essential for a researcher, such as communication, planning, time management, problem solving, conflict resolution, as well as building a greater self-awareness of your learning and working styles. Furthermore you will create good atmosphere to promote collaborative research among your peers from different scientific fields.
The ‘How to succeed in your PhD I – online edition’ course is an interactive programme composed by four sessions of 2h each one – and that it is compulsory to attend all four sessions. This is because the sessions build on one another, and messages are frequently delivered across the sessions and days, rather than in discrete activities.
There are two equivalent courses with 25 participants each. Both courses have the same content and you will find PhD students from all BIST research centres.
- Course 1: Monday and Wednesdays (15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th) February from 10:00 to 12:00
- Course 2: Tuesday and Thursday (16th, 18th, 23rd and 25th) February from 17:00 to 19:00.
Use the registration form (see link below) to indicate which is the course you can attend. In case you have availability to attend both courses, please indicate this option. Your flexibility will help to balance the number of participants in both courses.

The two courses are taking place online using the zoom platform. Participants will receive access details prior the starting of the course.

Speakers
Leticia Chico
She starts working in ICIQ on 1st June 2017, as the Learning & Development Officer, and her big challenge is how to train ICIQ researchers, specially how to help them developing their soft skills. From June 2018 she is the Manager at the Human Resources Unit. She is in charge of develop different projects as te Career service, the equality plan, etc. From 2002, Leticia has been involved in educational projects. She started as an ITC and Human Resources teacher in Practices Enterprises Methodology courses (SEFED Program). This practical methodology is based in learning by doing concept. Professional and social competences are developed thanks to this practical methodology. From 2007 to 2017, she has worked as the head of Training Area in the foundation that manages in Spain the Practices Enterprises Methodology (Inform Foundation). She has been in charge of teachers training program, the e-learning platform and she has been managing several mobility projects (Erasmus).
Andreu Gual
Andreu Gual is the COO at Corkscrew, a company dedicated to create learning environments to help people and organisations thrive in the 4th Industrial Revolution by developing and cultivating their “uniquely human skills”. Over the last few years he has facilitated learning spaces for more than 1.000 entrepreneurs with strong focus on, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. Corkscrew partners with Universities and organisations in the USA, Australia, Canada, UK, Sweden. Previous co-founding Corkscrew, Andreu worked as consultant for many City Councils in the world, such as NYC, LA, Moscow, Paris, Santiago de Chile, Barcelona or London helping them in their innovation and procurement strategies.
Emma A. López
Emma is an independent consultant in organisational development with a strong focus in conflict management. She provides mentoring and training to improve the conflict resolution, self-confidence, leadership and communication skills of individuals who want to establish more successful interactions in their workplace. She also helps devise organisational policies and practices to prevent and manage conflicts, improving working conditions and productivity. Passionate about people, Emma has twenty years experience in public and private organizations in the legal & conflict resolution field in the UK and Spain. With extensive experience as a trainer, she has created and provided the postgraduate Mediation Program at the Rovira i Virgili University. She is also the author of several articles and books on conflict resolution, mediation and Restorative Justice practices.
Núria Bayó (TEAM COORDINATOR)
Nuria obtained her PhD from the University of Barcelona and the Institute for Biomedicine Research in Barcelona. She has worked as postdoctoral researcher for two year at the McGill University and University of Montreal and two year at the ETH Zurich. Then she has worked as researcher in a spin-off company for one year and later she moved to IRB Barcelona to lead research projects for being translated to market. She holds postgraduate studies in Innovation management (UB), course on entrepreneurship (UC Berkeley), and Master in Project Management (La Salle) and Master in Leading High Perfomance Teams (EADA). She has joint the BIST core team from 2016 to lead the strategic lines of Education and Talent to foster the development of research within the BIST community.
