Dr. Alejo Rodriguez-Fraticelli has been appointed ICREA Research Professor this year. As a scientist, he has challenged the traditional model of hematopoiesis by revealing heterogeneity among individual hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and the differentiation trajectories they undertake. To study this heterogeneity, he developed genetic tools that record the single-cell lineages of thousands of stem/progenitor cells in vivo at unprecedented resolution, highlighting remarkable differences between stem cell behaviours.
He also identified specific gene programs that determine stem cell fates and has been applying his findings to study how differences in stem cell self-renewal behaviour influence the response of these cells to leukemic mutations and ageing. Dr. Rodriguez-Fraticelli presented his findings at the FASEB Meeting 2021 and has received invitations to submit articles from editors of top journals in the field.
