A team led by Dr. Nuria López-Bigas, ICREA researcher and head of the Biomedical Genomics laboratory, has been awarded a 5-year project supported by €10M from the European Commission to implement and systemise tumour genome interpretation for clinical decision-making. The project involves 17 partners, including nine hospitals and healthcare centres from four European countries, and also patient associations, and research centres.
The project aims to inform medical doctors about the most effective treatment for each patient by interpreting the profiles of mutations in a specific tumour through the Cancer Genome Interpreter platform. To promote knowledge exchange and engage patients in personalised cancer medicine, the project also includes setting up a virtual tumour board formed by international experts and involving patients’ associations.
Dr. Lopez-Bigas and her team have worked on the Cancer Genome Interpreter for over five years. Through this project, they intend to optimise it for use in hospitals and healthcare centres to support decision-making by clinical oncologists.
