Metabolic Reprogramming in Cancer Progression: Making the difference

Presentation

Organizer: IRB BioMed Seminars

Speaker: Dr. Patricia Altea Manzano, PhD  - Fendt Lab /Lab of Cellular Metabolism and Metabolic Regulation, VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology  | Leuven, Belgium

Date: Friday, 24 February 2023 at 12PM

Place: Felix Serratosa Hall, PCB

Host: Salvador Aznar Benitah, Ph.D - Group Leader , Stem Cells and Cancer, Aging and Metabolism Programme Coordinator

Abstract:

As the disease progresses, tumor cells undergo dynamic phenotypic changes, which require metabolic adaptations to meet their changing requirements. Recent work demonstrates that the metabolic properties and preferences of tumor cells change during cancer progression. Thus, there is an emerging view of cancer metabolism as flexible and context-specific. She will discuss how metabolic phenotypes evolve as cancer progresses in different environments to fuel proliferation, invasion, and growth as a secondary tumor as well as potential therapeutic implications

Biosketch:

Patricia Altea-Manzano obtained her PhD in Biomedicine in Granada (Spain) at the Centre for Genomics and Oncological Research (GENYO) in 2017. After, she obtained a second Master's degree in Clinical trials at the University of Sevilla (Spain) and worked for one year at the Department of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. In 2018, she moved to Belgium to start a postdoctoral position in the Lab of Prof. Sarah-Maria Fendt at VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology. As part of her current research, she is unraveling the metabolic properties of tumor cells during the formation of metastasis in order to develop improved therapeutic strategies for patients with metastatic cancer
