Abstract:
Innate immune cells, such as dendritic cells and macrophages, colonize virtually every organ of the body. They have very potent immune functions that contribute to prevention or progression of diseases and can also regulate tissue homeostasis. However, our knowledge on the mechanisms controlling dendritic cell and macrophage behaviour and how this can be harnessed therapeutically is limited.
In this seminar, she will explore the potential of dendritic cells to control cancer progression and relapse. Their unpublished data show that the anti-cancer functions of dendritic cells depend on their metabolic plasticity. Moreover, she will reveal the metabolic diversity of tissue macrophages that is dictated by their organ of residence. In detail, they uncovered a tissue-specific vulnerability of macrophages that can be exploited to ameliorate obesity-associated disorders.
Overall, she will show how our better understanding of the biology of innate immune cells allows the modulation of their functionality to combat non-infectious diseases.
