Presentation

Stem cells play a crucial role in all aspects of biology from embryo development to the maintenance of adult tissues. Adult stem cells are unique among somatic cells in that they can undergo asymmetric cell divisions and are responsible for the self-renewal and repair of tissues throughout the lifespan. Recently, a population of cells exhibiting stem cell properties has been isolated from a number of solid and liquid tumours. These cancer stem cells are believed to be responsible for tumour relapse as they can efficiently initiate and regenerate a new tumour similar to the tumour of origin. In this meeting we will explore the latest developments in the genetic and biochemical mechanisms that regulate stem cell specification and self-renewal in normal and tumour tissues. Specific topics to be discussed include the characterisation of stem cell niches, the role of stem cells in tumor initiation and the parallelisms between normal and cancer stem cells and their significance for tumour prognosis and therapy.

The conference will provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers interested in the connections between stem cell biology and cancer to meet and discuss the latest advances in this field.

Organised by IRB Barcelona with the collaboration of the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria Foundation (fBBVA).

Hosted by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC).
