Dr. Modesto Orozco, Group Leader at IRB Barcelona, has been awarded the prestigious ICREA Acadèmia 2024 Award, which promotes high-impact research at Catalan universities.

This is the second time that Dr. Orozco has received this recognition.

Since its inception in 2008, the program has recognized 439 researchers from public universities in Catalonia.

 

 

 

Dr. Modesto Orozco, Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Modelling and Bioinformatics at IRB Barcelona, ​​has been one of the researchers distinguished with the ICREA Acadèmia 2024 Award, given by the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA).

The ICREA Acadèmia Awards aim to foster research excellence in Catalan universities. Since its inception, 439 members of the Catalan university system have been honoured with prizes through this programme. These awards are directed exclusively to university professors who are teaching and are in an active and dynamic phase of their research careers.

Dr. Modesto Orozco has been, since 2002, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Barcelona and coordinator of the Molecular Modeling and Bioinformatics Program at IRB Barcelona since 2005, where he currently also coordinates the integrative research nodes.

He led the Department of Life Sciences at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center from 2005 to 2015. He has also been a consultant, advisor and editor to different scientific societies, and is the founder and president of the spin-off of IRB Barcelona and Barcelona Supercomputing Center Nostrum Biodiscovery.

The research activity of Dr. Modesto Orozco focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms of how DNA folds, interacts with proteins and adopts different three-dimensional structures, all through advanced computational tools and molecular simulations. His research is documented in nearly 500 publications in leading international journals. His publications have collected more than 35,000 citations with an h-index of 93, the highest for a computational chemist in Spain.

This marks the second time Dr. Orozco has been honored with this recognition. He received the first one in 2011.

The ICREA Acadèmia Programme, established in 2008, aims to facilitate the dedication to research of university professors who are in a fully active and expansive phase of their research career.

Of the 29 group leaders currently working at IRB Barcelona, ​​15 are ICREA Research Professors and 5 have been awarded the ICREA Acadèmia distinction.
