The Science Fair hits Barcelona

This weekend, 18 and 19 June, Ciutadella Park will be turned into a science exhibition for public of all ages. In its tenth year, the Science Fair will involve several research centres from around Catalonia, among them IRB Barcelona.

The Fair will take place during the whole of Saturday and on Sunday morning in the park entrance via Lluís Companys Street and will involve more than 100 free activities for all ages held in 30 purpose-designed spaces. 

IRB Barcelona workshops

For this event, IRB Barcelona will be doing three workshops, run by PhD students from various labs. Ignacio Castrillón and Sara Cano will do a workshop explaining how new medicines against obesity and diabetes type II are discovered. Also, the general public will have the opportunity to use a microscope to look at the differences between cells from a healthy person and those from a patient and also to participate in a small experiment.

Lada Murcia and Celia Santos will be in charge of the other two activities undertaken by IRB Barcelona. Called “Women and science”, the first will gauge how much the general public knows about the contribution of women to science through a quiz about past and present female scientists. The second activity, called “Create your own monster”, will explain how the genetic code works and participants will use this information to draw a “monster” following instructions like the ones used by our own cells.

All research centres belonging to the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) (CRG, IFAE, ICIQ, ICN2, ICFO and IRB Barcelona) will be doing their own activities over the weekend.
