IRB Barcelona scientists move part of their laboratories to "La Pedrera" building with the goal of fostering interaction with the public.

Tomorrow, Saturday 19 October the Barcelona Science Park, together with la Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera, is relaunching the initiative “Fes Recerca!” (Do research!), a series of scientific workshops, four in total, designed for the public and involving researchers from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona). The sessions will be held in Antoni Gaudí’s renowned building, “La Pedrera”.

“Fes Recerca!” seeks to improve scientific culture by giving citizens a hands-on research experience, and to strengthen scientific vocation among students. Researchers invite the public to perform experiments and to learn the lab techniques used in their current day-to-day biomedical investigation.

The workshops will be held from 11h until 13h on the following Saturdays: 19 October, and 16, 23 and 30 November.

IRB Barcelona Workshops

19 October

"Building proteins", organized by researchers from the Proteins and Peptides lab at IRB Barcelona. Tutors: Miguel Moreno, Anna Guimerais and Salvador Guardiola.

One of the trends of current biomedical research focuses on the study of proteins and peptides as therapeutic agents. Scientists Miguel Moreno, Anna Guimerais and Salvador Guardiola will explain the synthesis of peptides and research they are carrying out in the IRB Barcelona lab for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and AIDS. Then attendees will also synthesize a peptide as a tentative drug to combat Alzheimer and will analyze the molecule.

30 November

"How drugs are made?", organized by researchers from the Combinatiorial Chemistry lab at IRB Barcelona. Tutors: Sonia Ciudad, Pol Arranz and Bernat Guixé

Sonia Ciudad, Pol Arranz and Bernat Guixé will explain how drugs are developed for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Next, attendees will have the opportunity to synthesize and analyze a drug for Parkinson disease.

About IRB Barcelona

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
