Journalist Josep Corbella, La Vanguardia, devotes a double page to explain some successful examples of centres in Catalonia capable of attracting non-Spaniard scientists in spite of the economic scenario. La Vanguardia summarizes the main assets of Catalan centres, among these the administrative organisation of centres like IRB Barcelona, which release researchers from paperwork, allowing them to devote themselves entirely to science. Another advantages are scientific freedom based on criteria of excellence and the availability of a highly competitive environment. The article also includes an interview with the director of the ICREA programme of the Catalan Government, Jaume Bertranpetit. Established in 2001, ICREA is an initiative that seeks to attract talent to research centres and universities in Catalonia, IRB Barcelona being the CERCA centre with most ICREA researchers in its ranks (*2011 ICREA annual report).
