The Spanish education minister, Ángel Gabilondo, visited the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), on Monday February 7, as part of a tour of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). He was accompanied by Joan J Guinovart, director of IRB Barcelona, Didac Ramírez, rector of the UB and chairman of the PCB, Antoni Castellà, Secretary for Universities and Research of the Government of Catalonia and Fernando Albericio, director of the PCB, among others.
As part of the tour of the PCB, the minister stopped in at the laboratory of Ernest Giralt, where he learnt about their research on the design, synthesis and structure of peptides and proteins. He also heard about some of the educational initiatives organized by the PCB aimed to bring research to university students, including the annual "Passa l'Estiu the Parc!" programme, in which IRB Barcelona scientists are actively involved.
