The consortium involves the research group headed by María J. Macías, specialist in the determination of biomolecular structures.
The Ministry of Science and Innovation has given the go-ahead to a Consolider-Ingenio 2010 project in molecular oncology, coordinated by the researcher Juan Valcárcel at the Center for Genomic Regulation, in Barcelona. The groups participating in the consortium include that headed by María J. Macias, ICREA researcher at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona).
Called “An integrated approach to post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression and its role in human disease” (RNAREG), the project will provide new data on the molecular mechanisms behind gene regulation and the alterations observed in some tumours. The 12 groups participating in the consortium will also study the role RNA-binding proteins in the control of cell multiplication, ageing and cell death.
María J. Macías’ group will contribute to the project by determining protein structures and RNA complexes, and by identifying the binding sites that facilitate the design of ligands that act as inhibitors.

About IRB Barcelona
The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
