The fair, organized by the PCB, presents the research projects currently performed by several R+D institutes in Barcelona
Marco Milan's group, which addresses the Developmental biology of Drosophila, is to participate in the fair Research Live (Recerca en Directe), an event that will be held on 9 and 10 May in the modernist building La Pedrera, in Barcelona. IRB Barcelona scientists will answer the questions posed by hundreds of curious students that are expected to visit their stand and by the public in general. They will present the latest studies on the fruitfly developed by the group and will explain why Drosophila is used as a model to study human diseases.
The research activities are disseminated by investigators themselves, with the aim to show the scientific knowledge that rarely reaches the public and that corresponds to the controversial stages during which knowledge is still being consolidated and about which the scientific community does not show consensus. The fair, therefore, provides an opportunity to talk to scientists and to gain first hand experience of the apparatus used to conduct their research. Together with Dr. Milan's group, Research Live will present another nine groups that belong to several R+D centres in Barcelona.
The fair is organized by the PCB with the aim to bring scientists and general public together in order to improve scientific culture in our society. Another major goal is to stimulate young people's interest in science and a scientific career.
About IRB Barcelona
The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
